News in the media

The news clip is the first news reports that was released after the 9/11 attacks occurred. The first thing we see is the interruption of A TV show, it is interrupted to talk about the attack that has just occurred, this signifies that the news is breaking as they interrupt a show for it and it makes the matter appear to be extremely breaking. The interruption of a TV show creates slight history as people will believe that it is extremely sever for something to be interrupted. Also, the fact that they cannot get live footage suggest that it is very sudden and unexpected furthermore making the news more enticing. Another factor that shows the news is extremely shocking and new is the fact that the news reporters have papers on their desks which they are reading from. the fact that the news is from america which is over 4,000 miles away and that the news was also breaking in England reinforces the size of the news it uses the gateway theory, the idea that there is apt of news in England yet this news gets through to being published. When news is believed to be big and current even though its not close to us it gets through to being published because its relevant.

Soap Operas

Coronation street

Simon Barlow: Simon is a teenage boy, in the clip he is talking to his mother about his birthday celebrations and the presents he has been given by her. He is being aggressive towards his mother and being unappreciative of the presents she has gotten him. The stereotype that surrounds teenagers that is used in this clip is that teenagers are rude. Here Simon shows common characteristics of the stereotype he insults his mum this reinforces the dominant stereotype that surrounds teens. He is also ungrateful or the presents he has been bought which further enforces the stereotype that teenagers are rude. In this example his rudeness is exaggerated as he is extremely impolite to his mum by insulting her, he also talks in an aggressive aggressive tone with an angry expression on his face which portrays a certain level of rude behaviour. The common stereotype that teenagers are rude has also been seen largely in the news media, news of rude children in school has been seen in newspapers such as the independent where it has been headlined that children in school are antisocial, rude and disobedient.

Leanne Barlow: Leanne is a mother of a teenage boy, in the clip she is talking to her son about his feelings and his birthday celebrations. She is being bossy and protective over her son going out with his friends on his birthday, instead of her. The stereotype that surrounds mothers that is used in this clips is that they are protective and are extremely bossy towards their children. Here Leann reinforces the stereotype by raking control over his plans and not allowing him to spend time with his friends on his birthday. She also grounds him because he does not want to be with her on his. in this example the dominant stereotype that surrounds parents is exaggerated as she does not let him do what he wishes on his birthday.

MY ADVERT FOR VERA WANG ROCK PRINCESS PERFUME

There are multiple target audiences for the product in my advert, in my opinion it could target a range of different audiences.
Target Audience:The primary target audience for this product is people who's interests are piqued by perfume and smelling nice. It is stereotypically aimed at girls and women.
It is also aimed at people who enjoy rock music as it is called Rock Princess. It could suggest to obsevers that the perfume is for for a rockstar as I have used the icon that is Queen.
Analysis
i have used this image of Queen's heads as they are well known. It is a celebrity endorsement, the fact that the perfume is in the hands of Freddie Mercury who is the lead singer of the band. the perfume being in the  presence of the band suggest that the band has given their seal of approval and that it is a perfume that they think is worthy therefore people will approve.

Codes and conventions

We can firstly see that this is a film poster from the billing block and the actors name being stated on the poster. The film poster is for a mystery film. It is evident that it is a mystery film as the main character is represented the dark and cannot be fully seen, similarly to the end of the film as the end is a mystery. he is also looking off view of the camera suggesting that there is something out of the viewers eyeliner again creating an element of mystery. The island is also made to look mysterious which also adds to the element of mystery. The red writing on the poster suggests danger as red connotes danger as does the fire in his hand. the fire being in his hand also could imply that he too is dangers. It is also suggested that there is a plot twist as the actors face is half in the light and half in the dark. The island is also made to look mysterious which also adds to the element of mystery.

we can firstly see that this is a film poster from the billing block and the actors names being stated on the photo. the film poster is for a horror film. It is evident that it is a horror film as the main character is represented to have pale skin and blood running down her face. Pale skin has connotations of illness or death which implies that it is a horror film as horror films stereotypically involve death. Blood also has connotations of death and danger which further suggests that it a horror film as, again horror films stereotypically involve death and danger. The actors name being in red also connotes danger and suggests that their character is dangerous. The characters face being half in blood and half clean could suggest a twist in the movie which would encourage viewers to watch it as they would be intrigued to find out what the twist is.

This poster is more of a teaser rather than a film poster as it challenges the codes and conventions of a film poster. This poster does not use a billing block and does not state the actors name. The actors name not being stated is useful as it advertises the film rather than the actor, the name stated on the poster is the name of the character in the film so that in the poster the only thing advertised is the film. The character is completely in black this could imply that he is a dangerous character as black has connotations of danger and death. also the fact that he is split between the middle also could suggest that there is something unexpected behind this character. The poster also gives a slight incite of the film to the audience interesting them in the plot, further encouraging them to watch the film.

Advert analysis

The producers are trying to show that the sauce is extremely hot, so hot intact that it resembles fire. Fire has connotations of heat and something being hot. It could be suggesting that the sauce is so hot it will feel as if fire is in your mouth, it quickly gets the message across to the target. they have used the colour red as it has connotations of heat this is eye catching because the first thing the advertiser wants the viewer to notice is that the sauce is hot. The red colour also has conotations of danger which shows the audience that the sauce is so hot intact, that it is dangerously hot and could maybe harm someone if too much is used.
Target audiences - The advertisement is stereotypically aimed at older people this is because hot sauce is typically aimed at older people as hot sauce would be inappropriate for children to eat.
-It could also be aimed at people who like danger, this is because the sauce is extremely hot and would appeal to risk takers

The producers are trying to show that pepsi is the hero behind Coca-Cola and is maybe the same but in fact better as coke is just pretending to be pepsi. The background is a rocky area this, to me, has connotations of a waterfall and this would suggest that the pepsi is fresh as is water. The slogan 'we wish you a scary halloween' succsesfully anchors the meaning, the meaning being that drinking coke is scary and pepsi would only ever be coke in the purpose of scaring someone. The red colour on the coke could, in this instance, suggest danger and evil as it supports the slogan again successfully anchoring the meaning.
Target audience - The advertisement is stereotypically aimed at people who's personal interest are greatly peaked by pepsi rather than coke. The top to tail rivalry between coke and pepsi could also peak pepsi lovers interests
- Also as the advertisement is halloween themed it could also peak the interest of people who like halloween and enjoy to dress up and celebrate halloween.

MEDIA MYTHOLOGY
If i was a creating a print toothpaste advert i would use the following mythologies...

  • Images of mint to show freshness and that the taste will be fresh
  • Set in dental practice to show that it is professional
  • White colors to show the toothpaste helps whiteness of teeth.
  • White room to promote cleanliness.
Media Mythology : Comely held beliefs, and they are used frequently to create meaning in advertising
Anchoring : Caption for something that has no clear meaning.

key messages:

  • One mythology surrounding the colour blue is that the colour blue is refreshing and the public are more likely to but a drink that is refreshing.
  • One mythology surrounding strawberries is that they are natural and refreshing, this fits into my advert because the advertiser would want the public to believe that the drink is refreshing and natural as people would be more likely to buy the product if it is refreshing and not artificial.
  • The milkshake is made to seem like a bomb with the anchor 'BOOM' which would make people want to buy it because people will think that it is the bomb and an explosion of flavour. It connotes excitement and drama.

Key messages:
  • There is water in the background, one mythology behind water is that it is refreshing and this could suggest that the perfume is refreshing
  • The writing and the name of the perfume is in French. Mythologies behind the french are that they are glamorous and lead glamorous lives, this would encourage purchase for people who want to be glamourous. It connotes sexiness, beauty and somewhat mystery. This is also a slight anchor as it is a message through the caption/name.

MEDIA TYPES AND TARGET AUDIENCES

  Audio/visual

Target audiences- The Hannah Montana movie is typically aimed at young, female, children aged between 6-16. It typically appeals to young children who are entertained by more fictional characters

It also, unusually, could be aimed at people who like music in all age groups. The Hannah Montana movie is somewhat a musical and could peak the interest of people who are interested in pop and country music and enjoy a musical element in films.

    interactive

Target audience:dino den is aimed at younger children as it is easy to play and the instructions are not complex. It is suitable for ages 4-10 years as it is very simplistic and does not require great levels of concentration. also as it uses images of dinosaurs, which stereotypically appeal to young boys, it could be said that the game is specifically aimed at the males.

It could also appeal to people who find instructions, and following them difficult. it would be suitable for people with learning difficulties and other conditions that can affect the pace of someone's learning.
